Spedag Uganda supports campaign to fight HIV/AIDS

Recognizing that business cannot operate in a vacuum, Spedag responded to the suffering caused by poverty, and the epidemic of HIV & AIDS in the community by partnering with Reach out project Mbuya which caters for the poor affected by HIV/AIDS.

A wise man, Winston Churchill once observed that ‘We make a living by what we get but we make a life by what we give” M+R SPEDAG strongly agrees.

Spedag believes that the participation of the private sector and fostering public-private partnerships is vital in providing enhanced visibility to the campaign against the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Spedag (U) Ltd is arguably the leading logistics firm in Uganda. Founded in 1998, Spedag (U) Ltd celebrated ten years in existence in 2008 as well as being the first clearing and forwarding firm in Uganda which had succeeded in having its Quality Management System certified to be compliant with ISO 9001:2000 standards.

Recognizing that business cannot operate in a vacuum, Spedag responded to the suffering caused by poverty, and the epidemic of HIV & AIDS in the community by partnering with Reach out project Mbuya which caters for the poor affected by HIV/AIDS. With statistics showing prevalence rates highest in the urban areas among the youths and children and the poor, Spedag responded.

Reach-out is a faith-based community organization under Our Lady of Africa Church Mbuya, Kampala which believes in holistic health care which includes drug prescription and supply as well as efforts to break the vicious cycle of ill health, poverty and desolation

M+R SPEDAG has furnished Reach-Out with containers for shelter in addition to UGX 45,000,000 (Forty five million Uganda shillings) to the construction of six rehabilitation units in one of Reach-out’s satellite clinic areas in Banda. These units provide accommodation to clients with ill health through recovery and while they get on their feet.

Spedag (U) Ltd and Reach-out share a vision to see the poor marginalized people living with HIV live a dignified life with hope.

In May 2009, Spedag once again reached out to the community by launching a two months long Art exhibition aptly dubbed “ART @WORK” on its premises. This project involved Artists reaching out to the less fortunate members of Reach out project. Half the proceeds of the sales went to the artists; all the rest went to Reach out Project. The exhibition brought together clients, business partners, the media and staff and once again shed light on the suffering in the community. The more privileged found a way to reach out to the community whilst satisfying their love for the arts.

Internally, with the realization that the company must respond for its own good, Spedag (U) Ltd has also made efforts aimed at sensitizing its staff through seminars and training and in fact implemented practical measures aimed at promoting protection because a healthy work force is pivotal for business.

Since her inception ten years ago, Spedag (U) Ltd has been very conscientious of her responsibility to the community. Spedag (U) Ltd remains tireless not only in attaining business excellence but in positively impacting the community.

Over the years, Spedag (U) Ltd has financed and participated in the repairs on the road to Biina Catholic Church. Partnering with HIMA/Larfarge and Habitat for humanity, Spedag (U) Ltd participated in building homes for the less advantaged people in Mukono in June, 2007. Spedag (U) Ltd actively participated in collecting resources to aid the flood victims in the Eastern region in 2007. It continues to partner with MTN by participating in the corporate funding of the annual marathons to boost the noble causes and aid the community. Spedag (U) Ltd has previously made annual financial contributions to Reach-Out Community project.
M+R SPEDAG is committed to this cause and works towards facilitating partnerships to reach out to larger communities believing that, “Together we can make a difference”. This is a demonstration of the benefits business can bring to a community and country at large.
